The Stone of Earth and Honey

Hold smoky quartz up to the light and it looks like incense smoke caught in glass, honey poured into rock. Kept close by those who need to come back down to earth, it is a stone for heavy heads, buzzing minds and the moments when the ground seems to tilt beneath your feet.

Smoky quartz begins as ordinary clear quartz, one of the most abundant minerals on Earth, deep underground. Over vast stretches of time, natural radiation in the surrounding rock slowly darkens it. Clear stone turns to ash and honey, sometimes to almost black. It carries shadow with it.

The Cairngorm Stone

Smoky quartz is the national gem of Scotland. For centuries it was pulled from the granite of the Cairngorm mountains, and "Cairngorm" became its old Scottish name. It was set into brooches, kilt pins and the hilts of sgian-dubhs (traditional Scottish knives). Queen Victoria was said to be especially fond of it, and in her wake it became the height of Victorian fashion. True Cairngorm stone is now almost impossible to find. The old seams are largely worked out, and the land is protected by the Cairngorms National Park Authority.

For Grief and Grounding

In 2020, at the height of covid and just as the country was locking down, my dad was dying of cancer. I moved in temporarily with my parents, taking my workbench from the workshop with me, so I could help my mum care for my dad. It was one of the most difficult times of my life. As the world descended into chaos, my world was collapsing too. I made myself a huge smoky quartz point amulet and wore it next to my heart. When things felt overwhelming, or the weight of it all pressed down, I held the quartz tight in my hand and felt my energy grounding. It became a source of comfort and healing for me in my darkest times.

Beyond Scotland, smoky quartz has been found on nearly every continent, including Madagascar, the United States, Russia, Switzerland and Ukraine. Most of what reaches us today comes from Brazil, where it grows in abundance. It sits at 7 on the Mohs scale, hardy enough to be worn every day.

Why It Belongs in Your Armoury

Smoky quartz is a stone of grounding and purification. Reached for after grief, fear and conflict, and in rooms where the air still hangs heavy after harsh words. Keep it close during meditation, scrying and spell work as a tether that keeps one foot on the earth while the rest of you wanders.

Cleanse with: water, incense, or by burying it in the earth for a few days.

Works well with: Amethyst, Onyx and other grounding stones.
